BEER

Because the various ingredients that go into beer come from many different places, it reminds me more of packaged food than of wine. Consider ingredient sourcing, water usage, bottling, and transportation issues, and sipping a cold one becomes less relaxing than it should be.

To find the best-choice brew, start with organic: buying organic beer—especially from makers that aren’t the biggest beer companies—is a great idea. The dream, as with everything from cheese to cucumbers, is to buy both organic and local. And here we hit a roadblock. Even if you could find beer’s ingredients—water, yeast, malt, and hops—in your area (and that’s a huge if), it doesn’t mean they’re processed locally. In fact, according to Max Oswald, director of sales and marketing at the Otter Creek Brewing Company in Middlebury, Vermont, the grain used for the malt in their Wolaver’s organic beer must be shipped to the Midwest to be processed. Why? Because that is where malt processing is done in this country. “It’s a conundrum. We do the best we can,” says Oswald.
